Bryson Brooks Franklin Bryson Brooks was born in Denton, Texas in 1975. Being from a military family, he has lived in many places throughout the United States and Europe. In 1997, he received his B.F.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. After college, he spent five years in Mexico City, where he developed his painting skills and ran The Red Room Gallery. He currently resides in San Antonio with his wife, Holly Hein Brooks; they share a studio and a home at the Blue Star Arts Complex.
The focus of Bryson's work for the last year has hinged on the line between realism and abstraction. Size is driving force with his work; certain groups of images lend themselves to description more readily when they are given appropriate space of the canvas. His lively palette and dreamy subject matter depict a surrealist landscape of strange imagery. When asked how he chooses the images in his paintings, he states "bunnies, bears, birds, and bees are not just placed in my work for their beauty, they begin with a "B", like Bryson."
Bryson's paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Mexico City, including Ex Terresa in Mexico City, Mexico; FEEL Designed in Beacon, New York; Galleria Ortiz Contemporary in San Antonio, Texas; David Shelton Gallery in San Antonio, Texas; and ADM Project in Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Brooks is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He received two Studio Merit Awards from The University of Texas at Austin and was selected for The Cambridge Art Association National Prize Show, Boston, Massachusetts, curated by Lisa Dennison, Chief Curator of the Guggenheim. He also has his work published in Tom Holmes', Eureka?, NY, New York, and Youshua Okon's, La Panaderia 1994-2002, D.F., Mexico.
